Same is the case with mindfulness meditation. The sole purpose of practicing mindfulness meditation is to bring one self to focus on the moment you are living. The past and the future hold no meaning if you cannot live the present moment to its full.

So if after all the time you spent in practicing mindfulness meditation, you should be able to live in the present, however briefly it may be. Mindfulness meditation trains you to focus entirely on one point in space and time. It is here and it is now. Nothing else matters.

To start with you will have to be particular in the setting for your practice. You will need seclusion. You will need silence or at least the least amount of noise. You will require some sort of specific time to get into the habit. And above all you will need a posture; comfortable, upright but relaxed, eyes slightly glazed and deep breathing, in through the nose out through the mouth.

You will have to make a conscious effort to stay in the present moment. Thoughts are like kids. They always want to play peek-a-boo with you. While you are trying to be in the present, they will try to take you to that first date or the first home run you hit. They can be equally cruel too. Reminding you of the heart break in you prom year or the mortgage payment which is due in a week is a child’s play for them.

In the beginning you may be able to hold your attention to the present only for a few seconds at the most. Quite a number of people get frustrated at this and consider quitting the meditation regimen. In fact they need not doubt their ability to be benefitted. As one experienced practitioner of mindfulness meditation once said, “You must do one thing at a time. Focus on one thing only. It is all right if you want to worry. Then just worry for some time and get over with it.”

That is the beauty of mindfulness meditation. You do not fight your thoughts. Let them flow like water over a hillside. The slightest indentation in the ground deflects the course of water in a new direction. During mindfulness meditation you use similar technique to deflect your thoughts. You do not try to block them; you deflect them away and get back to the present.

Now you do the same in your daily life. When you are writing an article then try not to listen to music or watch the news at the same time. One of the biggest fallacies of the modern times is the belief that multi tasking makes you smart. Without any doubt a human being is capable of doing a lot of things simultaneously. The issue here is that does he really savor the taste of what he is doing.

So try to bring an order and focus to your life. When you want to have a cup of coffee, then immerse yourself in the moment completely. Feel the warmth of the cup, the aroma of the coffee and feel the seeping comfort in your body. Get one with the moment and live to the fullest, even if it is just for that tiny second.

This communication exercise has been a very popular activity that gets praise every time that I’ve seen it presented. This communication exercise only takes 15-20 minutes and is a good break from your regular meetings.

Communication Exercise for the Workplace

This is best when everyone is sitting at one large table. Set markers all over the table and a blank piece of paper at every chair. It is also fun to watch as people come in the room and start smiling, wondering what is going on. Plus, markers bring out the child in everyone.

Let everyone know that they are to be silent, listen, and follow your instructions. Tell them that the purpose is to replicate a drawing that you’ve already created through verbal communication. Here are your instructions:

1.  Draw a circle

2.  Draw a triangle inside the circle

3.  Draw a square in the corner

4.  Sign your name on the paper

That’s it. Have everyone hold up their picture (keep yours a secret) and you will find that most of the pictures are different in some way. Tell them that none of your pictures match, so we are going to try this again. Ask the group why weren’t any of their drawings similar? Hopefully, the group will comment:

You asked us to be silent and listen. We couldn’t ask any questions.

The instructions were basic with no detail. The speaker needs to be specific.

The instructions were quick and straight-forward. We weren’t given the time to think through each instruction.

Take your group’s suggestions and use them. Therefore, have the group flip over their paper and start again. Use the following directions:

The key communication statement to tell the group is: Everyone heard the same message, yet everyone perceived the message differently.

1.  Draw a circle 4 inches in diameter in the center of your paper.

2.  Draw a triangle is inside the circle so that all three corners are touching the circle.

3.  Draw a 1 inch square on the bottom-left corner of your paper.

4.  Sign “your name” as spelled out Y-O-U-R-N-A-M-E on the bottom-right side of your paper.

Have everyone hold up their papers and hold up yours, bingo! This communication exercise is not only for the listeners but the speakers. We need to communicate and listen effectively to get the results intended. Hope this was fun!
